The opportunity that I have chosen to explore is basically the idea of creating a "Redbox" type system that would be located inside an airport, but instead of using movies, they would be substituted with only books and would follow all the same parameters that "Redbox" uses for movies. Everyone knows that airline traveling can be one of the most annoying processes of getting from one point to another, but with the "Books-to-Go" (potential name of my idea) airline customers could pass their time fairly easily.
*All of my interviews were with random people except the last one with Andrew, who is my friend*
Interview 1: Senior at the University of Florida, David Spreen, 23 years old
"So David what is your preferred method of travel if lets say you had to go from Gainesville to New York?"
I mean i guess the quickest way possible, so I would have to say flying.
"Yeah exactly. Have you ever had any problems before flying or any of that?"
Sometimes its smooth traveling and all my flights get in on time and the process is relatively quick, but there was one time I was in an airport for 12 hours because of layovers and that was absolutely terrible"
"That is rough, what did you do to past the time?"
Well at first I caught up on a homework assignment I had but then my laptop died and the airport Wifi is terrible so after that i just closed my eyes and was bored out of my mind for hours"
"Do you read often"
Not as much as I would like too but I do enjoy reading a good book whenever I have the opportunity to get too
"Do you know what Redbox is"
Ya, I love Redbox. I never go to theaters anymore and if I ever want to watch a movie I always just go to a Redbox
"What if I told you that I'm thinking of creating a "Redbox" type system but instead of movies there would be books, at airports"
That would be pretty awesome. I know there are so many people who love to read, thats actually a really good idea! Definitely could be a great way to past time
Do you see any potential issues with it?
The only real problem I can see from that is 1.) I could often times see people walking away with the books and 2.) Books are pretty big so you will need quite a large sector in airports to hold multiple genre's of books.
I talked to David, in Turlington Plaza, about the idea of "Books-to-Go" and I learned quite a bit from his talk. It seems to me that reading a book would infact be a sufficent way to past time in airports and air travel but there are factors that I did not think about when it came to how fluent the system would work.
Interview 2: Jasmine Dhalby, 23 , Senior at UF
"So Jasmine what would be your ideal way to get from Gainesville to California?"
My ideal way would 100% be flying, I fly all the time and it is definitely the best way to travel
"Oh you fly often, nice. Have you ever had any problems before flying or any of that?"
It really is all a coin flip when it comes to airline travel, sometimes it is a very quick process and other times you can get screwed over by layovers and all of that
"I see what you mean. When layovers and all that do happen what do you do to past the time?"
Well if i don't have anyone to talk too and I'm all caught up on school I'll either read a book or listen to music
"Do you read often"
Yes almost everyday if I can
"Do you know what Redbox is"
Yes, my parents back home always would get a bundle of like 4 Redbox movies at a time. Its a great deal.
"What if I told you that I'm thinking of creating a "Redbox" type system but instead of movies there would be books, at airports"
That would be amazing! I wouldn't have to bring my own books from home or anything, I would love if that was real.
Do you see any potential issues with it?
The biggest one I could see would be having a large enough area to where you could hold and distribute all the books within the airport.
After talking with Jasmine it seems that this idea would be very popular within the reading community and that if I could figure out all the kinks it could turn into a great idea.
Interview 3: Jessica Shiffner, 20, Junior at UF
"So Jessica what would be your ideal way of traveling from Gainesville to California?
Well actually I am scared of heights and planes so I try to avoid them at all costs so for me perosnally I would say driving.
" Have you ever flown before?"
I have flown before, but only twice. and both times was when I was fairly young
"Oh wow. So what do you do in your spare time to pass the time"
Either homework, hangout with friends, or read
"Do you read often"
Yeah I would say I finish a book on average about once a month
"Do you know what Redbox is"
YES. I have two Redbox movies I need to return later today actually. I love Redbox!
"What if I told you that I'm thinking of creating a "Redbox" type system but instead of movies there would be books, at airports"
I mean thats nice and all but like I said I'm never really at airports so myself personally wouldn't benefit that much from this.
After talking with Jessica two issues with my idea popped up into my head. The first was that only limiting "Books-to-Go" to an airport can severely cut my target audience by a lot and secondly many people, like Jessica, takes multiple days to finish up a book so I would have to figure out a deadline policy of how long people can have books out for.
Interview #4: Matt Mooney, 20, Junior at UF
"So Matt what would be your optimal approach from getting from Gainesville to New Jersey"
Well actually I make this trip quite often because that is where I am from and my parents live, and every time I have ever made the trip I have flown.
"Have you ever had any problems before flying or any of that?"
I have had some of the worst delays of my life flying out of Newark Airport, it can be terrible sometimes.
"That's rough, what did you do to past the time?"
To pass the time I just listened to music and play games on my phone
"Oh nice, do you read often"
ITs going to be bad to say but I haven't actually read a book in over 2 years.
"Do you know what Redbox is"
yeah thats the movie box thing where you can get movies for cheap and have them for a day or two
"What if I told you that I'm thinking of creating a "Redbox" type system but instead of movies there would be books, at airports"
That would be cool I guess. I'm not quite sure I would be using that unless you had sports genre magazines or short stories.
After talking with Matt it was made apparent that I need to have multiple genres of different books to appease multiple audiences. Also he mentioned magazines and those wouldn't be bad to include as well in the system.
Interview #5: Andrew Mills, 19, Santa Fe student
"Andrew if you had to get from Gainesville to Texas what would be your choice of route"
Easy flying would get me there the quickest.
"Have you ever flown before and if so have you ever had any problems before flying or any of that?"
I usually fly about once or twice a year to visit family and usually it's all good. But there has been a time or two where are flights have been so delayed we had to sleep in the airport overnight.
"That is rough, what did you do to past the time?"
Played on my phone till my battery died and then waited like a mad person.
"Do you read often"
Yeah every once in awhile I like to read a good book
"Do you know what Redbox is"
Redbox is a move! cheapest and easiest way to watch some of the newest movies out.
"What if I told you that I'm thinking of creating a "Redbox" type system but instead of movies there would be books, at airports"
That would be pretty cool actually, I probably would end up using that. I know my mom would for sure.
Do you see any potential issues with it?
Well i'm a slow reader so it would take me sometime to actually finish the book, so an issue I could see is the return policy you create for it.
After speaking with Andrew it became apparent that I need to figure out some sort of return policy for the books to give the readers adequate time to actually read the book.
