4A Forming an Opportunity Daniel Plattner

I believe there is an unmet need in regards golf and in tracking golf shots. Basically what I would use is the same technology that Top Tracer uses and integrate that into a pair of sunglasses and sensors on the clubs. This is the same technology that Top Golf uses where they have a chip inside the golf ball that tracks it to wherever it is hit. If we could use the same chip in balls and sell them with the sunglasses that can track the ball a person of any age could easily play golf and never lose a ball and not have to spend time searching and hunting for the ball. One of the main reasons that Top Golf is so successful is because of this unique way of being able to track ones ball and if the same idea of tracking the ball could be made so everyday golfers could track their own balls on any course that they choose it would be monumental for the actual game. I feel this unmet need could create a way for all golfers of all skill levels to not only improve their game but become more efficient at it. I would say there is about a 60% this opportunity exists.

Interview #1 - Male, 23 years old, 14 years of golf experience
Have you ever played golf before?
- yes I have been playing golf ever since I was 9 years old
What are your favorite and worst moment when playing golf?
-Easily my favorite part of golf is when I absolutely crush my driver shot and the worst is when you're having a bad day all around. Shanking shots left and right, losing balls, and just making poor contact those are easily the worst
Have you ever heard about or played at Top Golf before?
-Yes, I've gone numerous times.
What was one of your favorite things about playing at Top Golf?
- I love the unique games that you can play and the tracking system they have.
How often would you say you golf a month?
-probably around two to three times a month
When you play do you lose balls often?
-Haha I lose at least 5 balls every time I play
How would you feel if there was a way to prevent losing your ball ever agin? (well besides if you hit it in the water)
-That would be amazing, one of biggest nuisances of golfing for myself when I play alone is trying to hunt down my ball all the time. Sometimes when I'm feeling hot that can really kill my vibe.

Interview #1 - Male, 20 years old, 3 years golf experience
Have you ever played golf before?
- Yeah I actually just picked it up not too long ago, around the end of my junior year of high school
What are your favorite and worst moment when playing golf?
-I just am happy if I hit the ball consistently throughout the day, but when I'm off I am terrible. I have balls flying all over the place
Have you ever heard about or played at Top Golf before?
-My first time ever actually swinging a golf club and hitting a ball was at Top Golf
What was one of your favorite things about playing at Top Golf?
- Being able to hit all those balls and not have to go pick up after them
How often would you say you golf a month?
-Maybe on a good month once I would say
When you play do you lose balls often?
- 8-10 and thats on a good day
How would you feel if there was a way to prevent losing your ball ever agin? (well besides if you hit it in the water)
- Sounds almost impossible, I hit some shots way off the playing course so tracking it could be impossible I feel like.

Interview #1 - Female, 21 years old, 0 years of golf experience
Have you ever played golf before?
- not an actual game but i've swung a golf club before
What are your favorite and worst moment when playing golf?
-I don't play it enough to even have feelings for it
Have you ever heard about or played at Top Golf before?
-once, i went with a group of my friends
What was one of your favorite things about playing at Top Golf?
- well if the ball went more than 20 feet I could get points in one of the game modes they had
How often would you say you golf a month?
- 0
When you play do you lose balls often?
- dont play
How would you feel if there was a way to prevent losing your ball ever agin? (well besides if you hit it in the water)
- I mean I guess that would be cool, but I could seeing that being nice.

REFLECTION
After interviewing these 3 people it has become apparent to me that the only market who would even be interested in this opportunity is the golfer community. The people who actually play a lot were getting excited when I brought up my idea and were really interested in the idea.

SUMMARY
I still believe that there is a a need for this opportunity, however the initial market I thought I was working with seems to be a lot smaller than I first imagined. When interviewing ended I realized that the golf community would be the only group interested and sounded more or less that only the advanced golfers would be able to utilize this device to the fullest. So based off my feedback I feel that some of my values for the product are good but overall needs more work to be done. For entrepreneurs the customer is always right and one should adapt to new methods and beliefs that would better their product but I believe that staying firm in aspects that you truly believe are right is the best decision.

  1. Hey Daniel, I found this opportunity interesting mostly because I don't golf and I have not ever been to Top Golf, so it's interesting to see you adapting an existing technology to another use. I used to go to the driving range with my dad when I was younger, and I couldn't help but feel bad for all of the employees who had to go fetch all the balls at the end of the day. I think this technology would make their jobs much easier, let alone just regular golfers who play on a course! I think that this is a great example of adapting your product to the customer and responding to their feedback because I'm sure any golfer can agree that this has untapped potential.

  2. Hi Daniel. I personally have only been golfing a few times. However, my dad, step-dad and brothers all golf very often. I know that my dad would be very interested in this product considering the amount that he golfs. Having a small market is not always a bad thing. The golf community is decently large, and you would be able to do a good job marketing to them. I am learning how to play golf this summer. Great idea and post!

  3. Daniel, as someone who has just picked up golf, I think this technology would be awesome for people in my stage of golfing, where knowing precisely how far I hit each one of my clubs would be very helpful. Most of the time when I play, I am unsure how far I hit my clubs, so knowing in better detail would allow me to play much better. I have never been to Top Golf, but everyone I know that has gone (golfers or not) have had fun, so replicating that experience seems like an unmet need indeed.
